McDonnell was awarded an Academy Award nomination for her character in Stands With A Fist in Dances with Wolves and she is well-known for her portrayal of the President Laura Roslin in Battlestar Galactica which was the president's wife on Independence Day and for her main role in Donnie Darko as the titular character's mother.
